The stage of rug making in which cleaned, carded wool is made into yarn, either by hand or on a manual spinning wheel, and the individual threads are then twisted together into thicker strands. Twisting gives the yarn extra strength and durability, after which the wool is ready for dyeing. Hand-spun yarn is regarded as superior to machine-spun: its threads are finer and softer, and the wool looks shinier.
