Thick-piled tribal wool rugs from Fars province, 90x120 to 200x300 cm
A Gabbeh rug is the tribal south of Persia underfoot: knotted by settled tribal families — the Qashqai and their neighbours — in Fars province around Shiraz, with a wool pile left long, thick and soft rather than clipped short. The knots are few and large by Persian standards, and that is the point — the drawing stays bold and almost abstract, trees, animals and people reduced to simple geometry on fields of warm colour. Our carpet dictionary tells the story of the type in full.
Everything is wool: the pile hand-knotted from it, the dyes worked in small batches, so a ground can shift gently in tone across the field — a sign of the craft, not a flaw. The dyed pieces here run from reds and oranges to yellows and greens; the undyed kind, the natural Gabbeh in the sheep's own creams and browns, lives with our beige rugs.
That thick pile makes a Gabbeh the most inviting Persian wool rug there is: warm, informal and forgiving, made for lived-in rooms and bare feet. The pieces here run from 90x120 to 200x300 cm — from a bedside rug to the middle of a living room.
Its happy, unforced drawing is also what makes a Gabbeh the honest boho rug: it brings the colour without the costume. And if it is the flat-woven side of the same tribal tradition that calls you, our kilim and Sumak rugs are its weightless cousins.
