Specialists place them before the more structured but still open Serapi of the late 19th to earliest 20th century and the busier Heriz patterns woven after the 1910s, and how closely a design matches this phase helps them estimate a Heriz-area rug's age. The name comes from Bakhshayesh, a town in the Heriz district of northwestern Iran.
