The practice of giving a rug fresh air and light so that damp, stale air does not build up in it. Every few months the rug is shaken out and lifted, with furniture moved aside, so air reaches the underside, especially under sofas and beds, where moths favor the dark. A rug in a humid room such as a bathroom, or one kept in storage, is also carried outdoors once or twice a year for direct sun, for a few hours up to a day, with both sides given time to dry and the face's exposure kept limited because prolonged sun fades the colors.
