The clipping of the fleece from a living sheep with specialized shearing tools, the first step in making a wool rug. It is traditionally done in spring, when the wool is considered best for rugs, and the first or second shearing of the season yields wool with the most natural fat. Wool taken from dead sheep is thin and dry and turns up in cheaper, poorer-quality rugs.
