Standard dimensions for area rugs, typically 2'x3' (about 60x90 cm), 3'x5', 4'x6', 5'x7', 5'x8', 6'x9', 8'x10', 9'x12' (about 275x365 cm), 10'x14', 12'x15' and 12'x16', with runners usually 2 to 4 feet (60-120 cm) wide. Dealers group them as small (to 3'x5'), medium (4'x6' to 5'x7'), large (5'x8' to 8'x11') and oversized (9'x12' and up), though cutoffs vary. Because hand-knotted rugs are woven in metric units, real sizes can run a few inches off the label. A larger rug generally looks better than one too small: a good fit leaves 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) of bare floor to the walls, reaches at least the front edge of a sofa so seated feet rest on it, and extends 24 to 36 inches (60-90 cm) past each side of a dining table so pulled-out chairs stay on it.
