The routine for keeping a rug packed away for months or years. It is cleaned first (professionally if storage will last a year or more), rolled evenly and tightly with the pile inward (a rug too large to roll whole is folded lengthwise, then across, before rolling), and wrapped in breathable material, ideally natural fiber, cut about a foot (30 cm) longer than the roll at each end so both ends can be tied off. It then rests somewhere dry and well ventilated, with a few inches (several centimeters) of space on either side and nothing heavy on top, guarding against moths, mice, damp and long-held folds.
