Nomad weaving in deep reds and browns, pure wool, 90x150 to 140x220 cm
A Baluch rug is named after a people, not a place: the Baluch weave in the dry country of Iran's south-east and the borderlands beyond, and their looms travel, so the rugs stay at sizes a family can carry. The drawing is the old tribal vocabulary — repeating guls, boteh, the tree of life — hand-knotted in pure wool on grounds of deep madder red and red-brown, lit by beige and black. Our carpet dictionary tells the tradition's story in full.
That darkness is the point: of all the Persian rugs, the Baluch is the quiet one, and its wool mellows and takes on lustre as it ages.
These are rugs for rooms that want depth: against a pale floor the reds glow instead of shouting, and the formats — 90x150 to 140x220 cm — suit a bedside, a study or the front of a sofa.
For the same tribal language on brighter red grounds, see the Bokhara rugs of the Turkmen north; for its loosest, most colorful voice, the thick-piled Gabbeh rugs.
