Removing Red Wine Stains

Speed is everything with wine: the sooner you act, the less of it stays in the rug.

Hand-Knotted Rugs (Persian and Oriental)

Scrape the wine up with a spoon, working against the pile, into a bowl, until no more comes.
Cover the stain with foaming dish soap (without bleach).
Work the foam in with a white cotton towel, soaking up foam and wine together.
Dab with a second, dry towel until the pile feels dry. Never rub.
Brush the pile back down in the direction it lies.
Slip a bowl under the rug, beneath the spot, so it dries from below as well.
Red wine rarely comes out completely: book a professional wash for what is left.

Machine-Made and Synthetic Rugs

Don’t rub, but dab with a clean dry cloth to lift as much liquid as possible.
Apply a little cool club soda or cold water and keep blotting from the outside in.
For stubborn stains, make a paste of baking soda and water, leave to dry, then vacuum.

Never apply hot water as it sets tannin stains permanently.

Our care routine for hand-knotted rugs follows the advice published by Catalina Rug, a Californian dealer in hand-knotted Persian rugs.
