Round Rugs, Hand-Knotted in Persia

Every round rug in this collection is a hand-knotted Persian piece in wool and silk: a wool pile brightened with silk in the details, on a fine cotton foundation. The palettes are white and blue, some with beige, brown, silver or red accents, and the drawing follows the classic Persian repertoire of a central medallion and a floral border.

Round formats are rare in hand-knotting, because the weaver has to curve the border on a loom built for straight lines. That is why these rugs come from workshops that specialise in them, several of them in Nain, and why each one is a single piece rather than a size run.

Which Diameter for Which Room

A round rug is measured by its diameter, and the right one depends on what stands on it:

• Ø150 cm — under a small pedestal table, in an entrance hall, or as the rug a reading chair stands on.
• Ø200 cm — under a round dining table of up to about 120 cm, leaving room to pull the chairs back, or in the middle of a seating circle.
• Ø250 cm — under a large round table, in a square living room whose corners it softens, or as the centre of an open-plan floor.

Wool and Silk, and How to Keep Them Looking New

The silk in these pieces catches the light differently from each side of the room, so the same rug reads paler or deeper as you walk around it. Turn it a quarter every few months so it wears and fades evenly, vacuum along the pile without a beater bar, and blot spills at once with a dry white cloth.
