Finely knotted kork wool with silk, ivory and blue, 100x150 to 160x270 cm
A Nain rug carries the youngest great name in Persian weaving: the oasis town on the edge of Isfahan province wove fine cloth for centuries and only turned to carpets in the early twentieth century, taking Isfahan's designs and refining them into a style of its own. The hallmarks are a finely hand-knotted pile of kork wool — the soft fleece of young sheep — with the drawing outlined in silk, on light grounds of ivory and cream led by blue. The trade grades the fineness in la: the lower the number, the finer the knotting.
Most pieces on this shelf were woven in the Nain manner in Neyshabur, in Khorasan, and each product page names its piece's weaving town — read it as you would a wine label.
Light grounds are what these Persian rugs are chosen for: they lift a dim room, and the silk catches the light, so the same piece reads paler or deeper as you walk around it. The sizes here run from 100x150 to 160x270 cm, with several round pieces among them.
If it is the sheen you love, our silk rugs carry it further still; if you would rather have bold tribal drawing underfoot, the thick-piled Gabbeh rugs are the opposite pole of the same craft.
